Influential Home Price Indices Paint Fuzzy Picture

According to a report from financial services firm Standard & Poors, the housing price indexes commonly used by market participants and government officials are inherently flawed. Among the indexes cited were the Federal Housing Finance Authority (FHFA) Purchase-only Index, First American Core Logic's Loan Performance Index, the National Association of Realtors ® (NAR) Median Home Price Index, and the S&P/Case-Shiller Index. The report states that there is an "inherent sampling bias in the reports" which "ultimately skews sample selection which may lead to instability in home price changes from month to month"
